Dear ApOgEE,
I got your name through Khairil, as in the e-mail exchange below. I put out a posting on the my-oss list looking for someone familiar with GIMP or Inkscape. If you are keen to introduce the tools to some local illustrators, please let me know.
Regards,
gopi.

Hi Gopi,
18th December is not doable for me due to other deadlines at the time.
There is another person who does illustration using open source tools is
this person: http://blog.apogeek.com/mengenai-apogee/
I couldn’t contact him online, so it may be worth sending a message via
his website.

Thanks Sam & Khairil. The discussion about open source alternative
tools for local illustrators came about because of the event below. If
you guys are based in KL and free to attend, please come by on the
18th. You’ll get to meet and talk to the illustrators and maybe get a
feel about expectations and what it takes to conduct the training.
Regards,
gopi.

Hmm,
How conversant is conversant enough anyway? I’ve been using Gimp and
Inkscape for a while now, and know how to operate the basics. Nothing
too fancy.
Probably for illustration for kids book at least be comfortable enough
with the features of Inkscape in this workflow:

Expect also how to deal with setting up and using scanner, tablet,
exporting/sharing files and printing proofs for clients.
It’s easier if they’re from traditional media. If they have
Photoshop/Illustrator background, it’s not going to be fun.
If you’re doing Gimp for illustration/painting, you’re looking at also
working with brushes and importing/working with .abr files for things
like pastel/crayon/pencil “brushes” and also how unlike Photoshop, the
eraser in Gimp is treated as a separate input device.
I may do it as a MyOSS Meetup (for Inkscape). Not comfortable enough
with Gimp for illustration just yet where it’s likely to be used as a
digital replacement for traditional media.

Hi Gopi, I do use GIMP and Inkscape for my freelance graphic design jobs. Feel free to check my graphic design blog to see some of my artworks. If you are going to do the training on 18th Dec, and during working hour, I’m afraid I can’t attend it. I’m sorry.
